cervo is no stranger to producing high quality dancefloor ready house cuts. released on 13th october, ‘deyo / kasoa’ is no exception to this rule. after a tough period mentally and a formative trip to ghana, cervo combines his love for field recordings with his well known take on the classic house structure. the end result is slighter harder than his previous work but signifies his growth and development as an artist. the lead track, ‘deyo’, starts as it means to go on. straight away the punchy and energetic percussions draws you in and remains captivating for the entire track but it’s the melody that stands out. the sense of urgency is soothed by looping bass and piano riffs, complimenting each other perfectly throughout. ‘kasoa’ is approached differently than the flip ‘deyo’, more care and consideration is taken. it slowly builds up with field recordings as the backdrop providing context before allowing a clear and definitive vibe to be established.

the third outing for modern manners emerges on the back of two very strong 12inches that introduced this anonymous outfit to the world. timeless vibe continues where the last release left off, building up a wonderfully cosmic bed of processed melody under which casual hand played percussion and warm bass notes can linger. azzahar too keeps things pleasantly soporific with its gentle pace and lilting guitar refrains, and then middle east manners rounds this excellent trio of eps out with a beautifully realised swirl of sounds that find focus once a kick drum starts pulsing and the percussion starts building. quite who modern manners are is a mystery at this stage, but across these three 12inches they ve certainly made their presence felt in the softest, most laid back of ways.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

les graciés is a collaboration in the truest sense between paris-based sound artist gaël segalen and deepblak co-founder afrikan sciences. segalen’s experiments in electroacoustic sound met the wider world this year via a debut lp for erratum, an arresting work that showcases her ability to merge hypnotic murk ala angus maclise with the hard concréte of parmegiani & reibel. segalen’s ihearu imprint / organisation is a platform for her various doings, including psychogeographical audio works and multi-media collaborations, as well as servicing as a reference point for other contemporary female artists working across various mediums. eric douglas porter aka african sciences has been deconstructing and re-building forms of contemporary black music since the mid-2000’s, through releases on deepblak (the label he co-runs with aybee) and pan. his musical universe is one of warping cadences and celestial melody, referencing the bold work of percussionists like milford graves & art jenkins, the dissonant chords of motor city techno and stripped back essence of early chicago house matched with broken hard bop sentiments: all tied together with an aesthetic that sits somewhere between sun ra’s omniverse, jean giraud mœbius and dogon cosmology. together as le graciés, segalen and porter make a wholly unclassifiable strain of music that, while containing recognisable elements of each individual s work, also creates a third entity in the process, which can be heard to stunning effect on their forthcoming debut lp ‘low doses’ for firecracker recordings.

the third release for la freund recordings comes from amsterdam resident beraber. consisting of four strong and diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by chicago house legend vincent floyd, sun ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home. after working on hiphop and downtempo electronica under different aliases, this ep sees baris akardere venturing into up-tempo territories, marking the debut of his beraber moniker. all tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the korg m1 and yamaha dx7 with analog gear like the roland juno-6 and korg ms-10. kicking things off on the a-side is title track sun ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. after a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by deep house pioneer vincent floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original. the flipside opens with ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. next up is introspect, a serious electro-tinged cut with heavy juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. rounding it up nicely, forest rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with rhodes chords and field recordings from bali.

byron s ballads is a dance treat on the housey-ish vibe showing ceephax s melodic skills in full flow. citylink is a smooth house/disco track ideal for cruising the ocean highways and downtown boulevards. sneaker is a poundy 303 classic with an emotional melody which is simultaneously uplifting and melancholy. haliphax is based on ceephax s earlier -friend track- but has a nice camelot chord arrangement and disco finale that takes it to medieval heights. the hague is a simple upbeat house track with wintery strings and distant pianos over a throbby bassline.

ricardo villalobos remixes deardrum from alejandro mosso s album isolation diaries recently released on third ear. villalobos worked up a 40 minute jam from which this is a 9 minute section which moves from a gentle pattering of sounds into a full-on villalobos groove, taught and slinky at the same time, i.e. irresistibly funky. the jam then subsides into chattering noises before the groove begins again. burnt friedman s remix of isolation diaries is a slow burning super funky jam with classic burnt friedman dub elements laced through the track together with the melody twisted and phased. the closing track from the album, mounivers, completes this fine release.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

with this release a new label emerges under the name deep down. veebo delivers a smooth ep for the occasion. expect stripped down microhouse with spooky laughs and repetitive vocals. on the a side you’ll find essentially, a delicious 45 cut with a classic uk bass melody. on the b side it starts of with one two, a house driven, conductive tool. the ep ends of with ethereal, the title track that will take you on a modular journey with buttery pads and stripped down ultra deep bass lines. this label will continue to focus on the minimal groovin’ side of the genres of house and techno. expect more sounds from vivid antwerp soon.

after a feature on steffi s fabric 94 mix cd (and the accompanying dolly deluxe 3 release), late night approach debuts on klakson with a hyper funky electro twelve. the two tracks on the a side both show machine music that s simultaneously human, whether it s the melancholic shards of melody buried under -clarence mews- commanding rhythmic pulsations, or the beautifully striking chords on -luvquest-. however, the b-side takes us to gloomy subterranean pastures with the uptempo banger -primo-, while a2 -kit- crosses over into broken beats but still keeps the same shadowy atmosphere.

a raw edition to the urgent label, this release features three tracks with bags of clarity. the syncopated layers of a1’s “8-bit doberman” are followed by sounds of intense anticipation on b1’s “the wizard of gizzard”. a session of dusty hats and crashing claps ride a gentle melody to close the release with “dirt hurting” on the b2. urgent 005 provides the perfect set of intermissions for anyone that wants to lead the listener into the mindset of deego fresh.

new yorker anthony parasole provides three powerful, dancefloor productions for the third release onjoseph capriatis new label redimension. the exceptional opener ‘velocity wastes no time setting the theme of the record with its supremely-tight drum programming, jerky bassline and synth notes that spiral into space. ‘bang has similarly skipping percussion and a looped melody which reveals itself for a moment midway through the track before the pulse beats on. a killer, minimalist combination of drums, bass and the sample that the track takes its name from. finally, the restrained, warehouse feel and human touch to the rhythm of ‘hot zone again finds the berghain resident exploring the sweet spot between house and techno. his sonic voice between the two genres is founded on his wider influences, and the result carries a subtle funk, muscular beats and hint of nyc swagger. tried and tested by joseph capriati and sure to stay long in the bags of djs, parasoles fine productions have the hallmarks of an artist who knows exactly how to move a dancefloor himself. at once you both expect the unexpected and find that every progression or pad sweep arrives exactly when it was meant to.

time to welcome another newcomer to freerange with a brilliant debut that has already been gaining a lot of interest from early spins. stefano ritteri should be a familiar name to many, having dropped several well-received releases on key labels such as pets, rockets & ponies and get physical as well as his own monthly rinse france radio show. a producer in the old school sense, he has the ability and desire to flip from deep, emotive and down tempo jams to the most impactful, high energy floor fillers, all with a deft touch and unique and experimental spin. the italian producer, now relocated to london, has a studio chock full of vintage synths and hardware outboard which keep him inspired and ensure his output sounds fresher and fatter than most, as can be heard on this excellent two-tracker entitled a different happiness ep.

as a contrasting follow-up to our first single from rooteo & mahura’s metta album, the second single on made in green records keeps the format intact with entirely different results. deadbeat’s remix on part one was both respectful and subtly transformative, on part two, new york’s upcoming max mcferren, whose busy 2015 included eps on ultimate hits, allergy season, and 1080p, brings us a startling reinterpretation of album closer harmal very much in keeping with the vein of raw, aggressive house coming from brooklyn since that scene’s resurgence. the original version of harmal finishes the album in fine style, blending tablas, celestial electronics, and short melodica phrases that gradually swell with layers of vocal samples and orchestal pads before reaching a climax and slowly dying away in gradually receding layers of ambient electronics. mcferren’s remix leads off with only a bare framework of techno percussion. the entry of a sampled section of melody from the original signals a rapid transition to more abrasive territory, with sheets of metallic noise slashing through the high end, short vocal syllables stuttering, and an insistent bass pulse building up and breaking down with at least one element constantly in motion.

sebastian mullaert, swedens long standing techno, experimental and ambient producer, is back on mule musiq with three deep tunes that shake your emotions profoundly. on the a-side the epic track mirror seduces with discreet claps, a kind of drunken groove, deeply meditative tones and a twisted melody that arrests your emotions inwardly. on the b-side you find two tracks by the same name: broken mirror. b1 is a sensible layered grower that delivers unhasty grooving minimal techno for those who love to dance slow. the second broken mirror tune comes as a wa wu we reflection, is even more slow, but still deeply groovy and packed with mesmerizing sound particles that stretch your mind and soul endlessly. electronic music straight from the heart. full of human sensitivity delivered with sebastian mullaerts very own signature feeling for rhythmical journeys full of musicality and details in melody, chords and tones.
